Dear friends!
On November 19, 2019, National Kyiv-Pechersk Historical and Cultural Preserve plans to open the exhibition devoted to the revived Ukrainian treasures. Within the framework of this event you will be able to observe the rarities from the Dormition Cathedral that belong to the Fund collection of the Preserve.
Being the spiritual center of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, the Dormition Cathedral has long been playing the role of the main “preserver” of the material treasures created by the real masters. Numerous contributions to the vestry of the Cathedral bear the stamp of their donators, either well-known or unknown personalities. Among them was Hieromonk Benedict, the founder of Pechersk Monastery. He donated the Blessed Cross to the Dormition Cathedral in 1719.
The Cross is the real example of the ornamental art of the 17th century. Its gilded silver mounting is decorated with the colored glass and corals fixed on its open-work tops. The handle has the donative engraving. On the right side of the Cross there is the traditional carved image of “Crucifixion”, on its reverse side - the image of the Mother of God with prayerfully folded hands.
The Blessed Cross presented at the exhibition symbolizes only a small part of art treasures from the Fund collection of the Preserve.
