Icon «Christ in Majesty», Ukraine, Galicia, 16th century (wood, tempera painting, carving into gesso) – an exquisite piece of sacred art. This remarkable image of Christ is a central icon in the iconostasis of an orthodox church. Christ, as Lord and Judge of the Universe, is depicted against mandorla (the light). The mandorla is bearing the symbol of the Holy Trinity: the red rhombus conveys the glory of Christ. It is the symbol of the earth, on which the Son of God proclaimed the Good News. The blue oval with seraphim reflects the sky with Heavenly Powers. The symbols of the four evangelists disseminating salvific doctrine throughout the world are depicted in the corners of a fiery rectangle. Until the end of the 19th century the icon was kept in the collection of the Church and Archeological Museum at the Orthodox Virgin Mary Brotherhood in the city of Chelm of Lublin Voivodeship (Province) in Eastern Poland.
After World War II, in 1945, the icon was transferred to the National Kyiv-Pechersk Historical and Cultural Preserve. It has been repeatedly exhibited both in Ukraine and abroad. Let’s #stayathome and discover the beauties of the Preserve’s collection together!
