Most of the objects made of fabrics, used in Ukrainian temples in the 17th-18th centuries, were highly decorative. The clergy's vestment distinguished by festivity and elegance owing to lavishly ornamented original elements, including embroidered decorations in the shape of a circle with rays, so-called “stars”. They were embroidered separately on the canvas, then cut out and stitched on to the finished product.
Today we present to your attention a decoration on a phelonion (priest's mantle) with the embroidered image of Christ ascending to heaven surrounded by cherubim. The Savior is represented in the iconographic type of Almighty: dressed in a chiton and himation, the right hand raised in blessing. Nail wounds are marked on His hands and feet. The miniature sewing of the item is skillfully executed by the technique of couching. Some images are decorated with small pearls and precious stones. According to the descriptions of the sacristy of the Dormition Cathedral of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, it is known that the embroidered decoration adorned the brocade phelonion, made at the expense of the Mother Superior of the Kyiv-Ascension Monastery Maria Magdalena Mokievska, mother of Hetman Mazepa. It is possible that she made a valuable contribution to the Lavra on the occasion of her elevation to the rank of Hegumenia in 1709. The composition “Ascension” on the phelonion pointed to the dedication of the convent, headed by the donator.
